The world makes me so sad sometimes. This is probably the most part of the reason why my writing seems to be eternally pessimistic; after all it is a form of expression I guess. I wrote an article just before the start of last Summer entitled 'This World Swallows Souls'. Check it out. I was writing mainly about black on black crime within inner-city London, and how the victims of violent street culture are getting younger and younger.
Today, a mood perhaps compounded by inclemently overcast, drizzling skies, brought back the feelings of despair and sadness that I were able to transcribe into words all those months ago. Not in any way, shape or form am I a believer in Conservatism, however I can only agree with what David Cameron said during a visit to a community centre in Gillingham(!?), ironically, earlier today. Cameron suggested how we are experiencing a 'social recession' in the UK, even if we are supposedly climbing out of an economic one.
I have observed, during my time on the planet, a relatively similar society as Cameron. It's true. Broken homes, broken families, street crime, unemployment and educational standards are all worsening. The reason why Cameron chose to bring this up, however, was in reference to the case of the 'Doncaster Boys,' as they have been aptly dubbed by the British tabloids, who were sentenced today.
The incident actually happened on my Birthday last year, which makes it quite sad to think that, around the time of me opening my presents and preparing for an extremely heavy binge drinking soiree, two young children were to commit one of the most sadistic and sickening acts of 'child crime' since, arguably, the infamous case of James Bulger's murder in 1993. The boys responsible were aged 10 and 12 years old as they led the two victims, aged just 9 and 11 from a residential playground into nearby wasteland, where they subjected them to a 90 minute long attack.
During that time, the victims were repeatedly punched, kicked, stamped on, choked with washing line, hit over the head with bricks and boulders, cut with glass, burned with cigarettes, and the older victim was hit over the head with part of a broken sink, leaving him a matter of minutes from death. Besides from physically violent nature of the assault, the younger victim was made to urinate on his friend's face, and they were also forced to engage sexual acts with each other. The younger victim was then asked to kill himself, and he proceeded to force a sharpened stick down his throat, before slumping against a tree, pretending to be dead so that he would be 'spared'.
The attack eventually stopped, due to a pre-arranged appointment between the attackers and their violently sadistic, jealous cannabis smoking father, and also because their 'arms were aching.' The eldest victim urged his younger counterpart to save himself, claiming that he couldn't see, or move any part of his body, and that he should be 'left there to die'.
It has taken me a while to even try to comprehend placing myself in the position of either victim or attacker. However macabre the attack was, the home life of the two perpetrators was arguably just as indifferent in comparison. As two out of nine siblings, the boys ended up in Edlington, where the attack took place, due to the exit of their father and the inability of their mother to cope with their behaviour. They had learned the way of violence from an early age, with their father choosing to discipline them with a golf club, and subject their mother to brutal beatings in front of them.
It is extremely painful to witness such a case of poisoned life. No children of such tender ages, in terms of victims and attackers, should have to go through what these boys involved have been through, and with an estimated 31 opportunities for Social Services to intervene, it is yet another example of a socially failing state, in what is falling into a perpetual decline. If there was ever an incident to underline the flaws of contemporary Britain, its culture and society, along with current and future generations, it is all of the above. Lets hope David Cameron can come in and scrutinize the 'povs' even more so, and perhaps they will just kill each other off. I joke.
