It's a Crime ting!

Another awkward close to the day again yesterday. I'm finding it harder and harder to sleep these days. This has sparked an interest in Insomnia, which is proving to be one of my priority areas of research at the moment.

So, last night I was lying in bed, bored, feeling slightly nauseous, and as usual, my brain was running overtime, trying desperately to pigeon-hole the days thoughts.

Somehow I ended up looking at crime figures on the Guardian website. It came to my attention that in Colombia, there are 61.1 homicides per 100,000 people. My initial thoughts were fairly non-eventful. I pictured 61 people standing in a room, followed by 100,000 people standing in a room. My subsequent thoughts were something along the lines of, 'oh, right.'

However, I then started to look at the murder rates of all the other countries in the world, countries like Denmark, for example. The murder rate in Denmark is 1.1. I was beginning to look back on my preceding thoughts with feelings of anger and disappointment regarding my ignorance, and generally bad artithmetic.

Such feelings of woe and despair were further exacerbated when it came to my realisation that I could be in the process of enduring a self induced bout of ill-fate and generally bad luck. At work, in 2007, my good friend Jimmy and I smashed up a mirror, because we were bored. That's 7 years bad luck right?

Burglaries throughout the UK decreased by 12%, and bicycle thefts by a further 7%. In 2009, I was sadly a victim of both.

My biggest revelation was that, suprisingly, Ghana are the biggest stoners. A staggering 21.5% of the Ghanaian population consume Cannabis. If my numerical evaluation of this statistic is correct, 1 in 5 Ghanain people are baked to fuck most of the time. This was quite unexpected news to me. For some reason I expected it to be higher in Europe. I guess they're just more chilled out than us in Ghana, and with a lack of EU drug legislation breathing down your neck, why not have a blaze now and again.
