John Lennon said it, few people probably believed him apart from Steve Irwin (R.I.P), but last night, I realised more than ever that Karma is everywhere.
It was about 4 a.m and a good friend and I were making our way back from a house party. The 149 bus was crawling along the Kingsland Road so we drunkenly decided to get off and walk.
We were approached by a small, horrendously dressed white man. Of all the stereotypes you would expect to see in such a place at such a time he was a complete anomaly. His blazer was ripped and it had badges on it, and he was relatively polite and well spoken. He reminded me of a bad version of a young Bob Geldof. Yeh, exactly.
After asking us for a cigarette, we were then informed that we would have to fight him to regain possession of our rolling tobacco. He seemed resentful of our youth and was referring to us as naive 'pretty boys'.
Seeing as we found it on the floor at the party, and our aggressor's schizophrenic tendencies were beginning to scare us, we thought we'd let him have it. Alas, after telling him that he had been bullied at school and he was generally being a real wanker, he proceeded to land a right hook upon my good friend's jawline.
Slightly shocked, confused and downhearted we began to retreat when, seemingly out of nowhere, a really nice vigilante-esque black guy took it upon himself to resolve the situation. It was like something out of Karate Kid. After returning our goods to us, and making the guy feel really small and guilty, he took him down an alleyway to punch him a bit, I presume.
Quite naturally, we thought it would be a good idea to leave the scene, but a remarkable example of instant karma. I hope that everyone's okay. Kind of.
